Another update on Tony

Originally posted on Multiply November 7th 2007

Hello everybody and thank you to those who have commented and are keeping us in their prayers it certainly is appreciated.

OK here it goes, yesterday - Sunday, I was at the hospital pretty much the whole day, the day went pretty good, he was still losing a lot of blood though, and by the evening his hemoglobin had fallen to 91 - when he went in it was 142 and they said at the ER that is was pretty normal, so down to 91 was scary. So the nurse called the doctor at home to ask what they should do and how to proceed, He had indicated to give him FFP (fresh-frozen plasma) but the last 2 times he had received that, he had bad reaction, and broke up in hives, so they called the doctor back and he was of course more concern in bringing his hemoglobin back up, so he told them to order 2 units of blood and 1 or plasma.

He also came in the hospital right away (obviously he doesn't live far, because he was there in about 20 minutes or so). He ordered a host of prescriptions, they gave him anti-histamine to try to ward off the reaction to the plasma, and it seemed to help.  I can't even begin to think of what other meds they gave him.

Because to top it off, he had a panic attack when he found out about his hemoglobin being low, and his blood pressure went sky high as did his heart rate - to about 140-150, so they had to react quickly to bring this under control. AND he had chest pain, they gave him 3 or 4 puffs of nitroglycerin, but it didn't seem to help a whole lot, so they finally gave it to him intravenously.

They eventually got all under control - oh and his potassium was low - if anyone who doesn't know about that, when it's too low, your heart can stop!!!!!

Finally the doctor went home after speaking with a cardiologist, and when he left he said the cardiologist would come over, so I stayed there until 10:30, and he never came. I wanted to wait until he came to leave, but it was evident that wouldn't happen.

When I called the nurses station this morning, they told me he was ok, but had 2 more episodes of chest pains, and they had to give him another enema - during the night! Because he was having a colonoscopy today. They said his hemoglobin was better, when I asked how it was, they said 93, that didn't sound that great to me, but the nurse said it was ok. I couldn't speak to him at that point, he was asleep and they don't transfer calls until 8am.

He called me around 10 said he was feeling ok, and told me about his night, he was disoriented when he woke up during the night, he thought he was at home and he was hearing banging, and he thought someone was trying to break in, so panic attack time again!!!

I tell you it's scary to see, when he got that in the evening, he was shaking uncontrollably, legs going, I guess the same as someone who is going into convulsions. Scary time!!!

Anyway, I just called the hospital just now, I asked the nurse who answered if he'd had the colonoscopy, and all she said was do you want to speak to your husband - so people are just not people persons!!! So she transferred me, and he said that no, he hadn't had it done yet and was waiting to hear, and had asked the nurse - the one who answered the phone - when it would be and she's supposed to enquire!!!

So that's where we're at, and I will post again when I have more news. So stay tuned :)

ADDENDUM: He just called back and now they say it MIGHT be this afternoon, tonight or even tomorrow IF they do it - geez, make up your mind guys!!!! SO, I'll keep you posted :)

I have been reading your updates in email. I'm so sorry he is having so much trouble. It is a scary thing. Especially when a man is scared. Just take care of you so you don't get down.

Poor Tony. Bad enough what's happening they could be a little humane about it, no wonder he's having panic attacks on top of it all. You are both in my thoughts and prayers and please don't forget to take care of yourself. (((HUGS)))

Just found your email and I sure am sending prayers for both of you. I know it must be difficult dealing with this as I find hospitals dont give you answers like they used too.
Lots of prayers,
Love Sandy
